More than twenty years ago, Rich Gaton and Ed Stiefel created BDI Pharma to serve the specialty pharmaceutical industry as experts in niche distribution. To this day, their involvement in the day-to-day operations is both enjoyed and appreciated not only by the employees of BDI Pharma, but by the many loyal customers who know them by name. They are joined by an executive staff of healthcare professionals, each offering over thirty years of industry expertise.
Richard J. Gaton co-founded BDI Pharma in January 1995 originally as Blood Diagnostics, Inc. In February 2009, the company moved into a new facility in Carolina Research Park located in Columbia, South Carolina, and was rebranded as BDI Pharma, Inc. In July 2011, BDI Pharma, Inc., was recognized as one of the State’s “Top Large Firms” by the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina.
Mr. Gaton has served on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Biotechnology Industry Organization (SCBIO) and multiple terms on the Board of Directors of the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA). He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, and as Vice Chair of the Heathwood Hall Episcopal School Board of Trustees. Mr. Gaton is a Liberty Fellow, class of 2012, a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network and a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO). He is currently involved with the Special Forces Charitable Trust and is a mentor with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Take One Make One (TOMO) program.
Mr. Gaton is a graduate of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Edward Stiefel, Jr., co-founded BDI Pharma, Inc., in January 1995 originally as Blood Diagnostics, Inc. In February 2009, the company moved into the new facility in Carolina Research Park located in Columbia, South Carolina, and was rebranded as BDI Pharma, Inc. In July 2011, BDI Pharma, Inc., was recognized as one of the State’s “Top Large Firms” by the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina.
Mr. Stiefel has co-lead the efforts of BDI Pharma, Inc., for the past twenty years in many different capacities, creating a stable and good standing company that provides life-saving medications throughout the United States.
Mr. Stiefel has served on the Board of the Heathwood Hall Episcopal School for multiple terms and is a supporter of many charitable organizations throughout South Carolina.
Mr. Stiefel earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg Campus while lettering four years and serving as Captain his senior year on the Nationally-ranked soccer team.
Rick Schindewolf’s career in healthcare spans almost 30 years and includes roles in finance, business development, and general management with expertise in service, manufacturing, and distribution in both large public and small private organizations.
Rick currently serves as Chief Financial Officer for BDI Pharma. His focus is on providing leadership and guidance in the areas of finance, IT, legal, HR, distribution operations and product sourcing with emphasis on process development and optimization to drive discipline and profitability in support of sales, marketing and the overarching strategic goals of the company.
Prior to joining BDI Pharma, Rick was CFO of Medicia Holdings LLC, a contract manufacturer serving the cosmetic and medical device industry. Before Medicia, he spent ten years with Cardinal Health, serving in various roles including Vice President Finance, Vice President Business Development, and Vice President and General Manager of Cardinal’s sterile filling Blow-Fill-Seal manufacturing business. While at Cardinal he was part of the team that created, through acquisition, the Sterile Filling Group within the Pharmaceutical Technology and Services division which later was spun off to The BlackStone Group as Catalent.
Before Cardinal, Rick was with Baxter Healthcare for ten years in various finance roles, as well as Fisher Scientific and RxElite, Inc.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of San Diego.
